SARMAD ALYAS- ASKAR, DDS, MSD
Board Certified Endodontist
Dr. Sarmad M. Alyas-Askar knew from an early age that he – like his father and mother – would thrive in the dental field. Immediately after finishing high school, he moved to the United States and earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Calvin College. Dr. Askar continued his education at Wayne State University to earn a Master of Science in Basic Medical Sciences. He then attended the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery and graduated with High Distinction in 2013.
Following his graduation, he completed a one-year general practice residency at Summa Health Hospital in Ohio, where he treated medically compromised patients and performed a wide variety of esthetic, surgical and endodontic dental procedures.
In 2016, Dr. Askar completed a two-year residency in Endodontics at Indiana University School of Dentistry and received his Master of Science in Dentistry and his Certificate of Endodontics. During his specialty training, Dr. Askar was involved in regenerative endodontics. He was invited to present his research topic “Direct and indirect antibacterial effects of various concentrations of triple antibiotic pastes loaded in a methylcellulose system” at the American Associate of Endodontists 2016 annual session. Later that year, his research work was recognized and published.
In 2020, Dr. Askar became a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics; a distinction held by a select few endodontists. To become a Board-Certified Endodontist, he successfully completed a series of rigorous and comprehensive examinations and case portfolios to demonstrate exceptional knowledge, skills and expertise in the full scope of the field of endodontics. This shows great inner motivation and exceptional commitment to continuing professional growth and applying new research and advances into the practice of endodontics while ensuring the highest possible quality of care for his patients.
Dr. Askar is a part-time faculty member at the Graduate Endodontic Department at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. He was also recently chosen to serve on the Alumni Board of Directors. Professionally, Dr. Askar is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, Michigan Association of Endodontists, American Association of Endodontists, and Detroit District Dental Society. He has been voted a “top dentist” by his peers in HOUR Detroit since the inception of his professional career through 2022.
In his free time, Dr. Askar loves traveling, trying different cuisines, and playing tennis, but mostly he enjoys spending time with his wife Dima and their newborn son, Simon.
